November 2018 Meeting

Our last meeting of the year! Thank you to this year’s officers and chairwomen who contributed their time and dedication to OCMQG!

2018 OCMQG Officers and Chairwomen!

Storybook Challenge

The winners! 1st, 2nd, and 3rd.

Our popular November Challenge was to make a philanthropy quilt based on a children’s, tween, or young adult book. The quilts will be given to the Orangewood Foundation December 4th. Our members also donated and contributed: $440 in gift cards, 27 quilts in a bag with matching books (the Crazy Quilters Guild here made themed bags to match the OCMQG quilts so they were all like Gail’s), 3 sturdy backpacks, assorted toiletries and accessories, cuddly stuffed animals, empowering books for their library, and many, many earbuds!

The Orangewood Foundation and the children they service are very grateful for the OCMQG’s overwhelming response to their wish list. Thank you one and all for helping improve the lives of so many children in Orange County! And thanks to Ann Ainsworth for heading our philanthropy program.

The theme of the challenge is “small piecing.” Here you see the color palette on the show board. The kits contain 10 WOF (width of fabric) of either white or cream and then a 5″ x 10″ piece of each of the fabric palette except for blue which is the background. Cut up your fabric in 1 1/2″ strips and sew them together using the inspiration photo as your model. Make your block 6 to 10″ wide and as long as you can with the fabric provided. Update on The Thomas Fire Quilts

By Gail: I briefly visited a sew in for Thomas Fire quilts yesterday. I went there to pick up blocks in sets to be sewn into tops. They are overwhelmed with blocks. They no longer need blocks. I picked up sets for 6 quilts. They are now requesting completed quilts, batting or backing. Check out update on  They have so many potential quilts that they can use machine quilters and folks that will do binding also. Just a brief update.
