February 2018 Meeting

OCMQG February 2018 Meeting Recap (held on 3/1/18)

Co President, Karen Miller, lead our meeting.

Important Notice about Meeting and Sew In Location Changes

We will no longer be able to meet at Cosmic Quilting starting the March 29, 2018 meeting.  New Location will be In Laguna Woods at Club Rooms 2 & 3 in Village Greens (24122 Moulton Parkway, Laguna Hills, CA 92637).  You will enter through gate 12.  This will be the same for majority of the Sew In’s.  The space has lots of parking and holds up to 50 people.  Booked through the end of the year for meetings.  Sew In’s have also been booked based on availability.  When location is not available for Sew In’s, we are looking into having field trips on those days.  Sew In times have also changed to 1-5pm to accommodate the new space.  Location has Restaurant and Bar there for purchase.  However no outside food permitted.

Membership Renewals

Membership fees for the New Year are due.  Dues are $50 for the year.

Workshops Update

The workshop chair has become available.  However, Julie has volunteered to take position. Thank you Julie!!!

Donations

We took donations for the Thomas Fire Relief effort.  The area is still accepting donations of fabric, thread, notions, blocks, finished tops, batting, completed quilts, etc.  If you have any donations, please bring to the March Meeting.

Philanthropy Quilt Challenges

We have lined out our Quilt Challenges for the year.  We will still be doing the challenges quarterly in May, August and November.  More details will become available as we get closer.  However, below is a rough outline for the year:

May:  May Mini Quilt – tenets of modern quilting and will be no larger than 24 x 24.

Artful August:  quilt inspired by a work of art (painting, architecture, etc) and no size limits.

November Storybook Philanthropy Challenge:  children’s or teen book theme, minimum size is a baby quilt.

Field Trips

We would like to schedule some field trips for the year!  Dawn has volunteered to schedule those.  Thank you Dawn!  A survey was passed to members before break with different locations.  If you have any new locations, please let us know!  Some ideas were Super Buzzy, A mid weekday trip to Purl Soho factory store, Visions Quilt Museum in San Diego, Etc.

Quilt Con Recap

Members shared about workshops they took, what their favorite part of the event, how colorful the halls looked with all the Charity quilts.  Members were surprised with the variation on colors from the fabric makers. Various members took classes that opened their minds to new takes on creating works of art!

Charity Quilts

We have some Charity Quilt that still needs homes.  Still need homes for our 2017 quilt con charity quilt (suggested for a military veteran/family), our 2018 quilt con quilt (already received 2018 received back from quilt con), and our 2016 Christmas quilt.  If you have any ideas for places to donate, please contact us!

Show and Tell

Update on The Thomas Fire Quilts

By Gail: I briefly visited a sew in for Thomas Fire quilts yesterday. I went there to pick up blocks in sets to be sewn into tops. They are overwhelmed with blocks. They no longer need blocks. I picked up sets for 6 quilts. They are now requesting completed quilts, batting or backing. Check out update on Superbuzzy.com.  They have so many potential quilts that they can use machine quilters and folks that will do binding also. Just a brief update.

Block Lotto February

Last month we had a Double Disappearing Nine Patch. Using solids – now “modern”!
