Speaker – Carrie Olsen, a quilter, spoke about her career path. Started as an elementary school teacher, but her quilting journey began with a visit to family in Seattle. Unexpectedly her quilting journey began. Carrie’s journey and creativity was a delight to hear. Her talents were very evident with the beautiful quilts she shared. Carrie will begin teaching/working at the Quilt Bee. We are all excited for the opportunities it will provide for quilters.
November Book Challenge – Our book challenge is a long running challenge we have undertaken for several years. The challenge is to pick a children’s or young adult novel and then create a quilt inspired by the book. Both the books and quilts are donated to local foster care youth through the Orangewood Children’s Foundation. Please go to our website for resources etc. to assist you in participating in the November Book Challenge www.ocmodernquiltguild.com
August Mini Quilt Challenge – voting and presentations of quilts! Many lovely quilts were presented AND the winners were Elizabeth Wing, Members Choice, Samantha Saturday, Best Mini Design, and Susie Johnson, Best Use of Color. Congratulations!
Upcoming Workshop – Susie shared Jean Impey’s Spider Web Workshop is September 11, 2022. This is an in-person workshop and we still have openings. Please email the guild at OCModernQuiltGuild@gmail.com or Susie at sujoh@hotmail.com if you are interested in purchasing a spot for this workshop. Members: $60 and Non-Members $70. There is also an additional $12 fee payable at the workshop for the template that will be used. Bring your sewing machine and supplies to the workshop. The scholarship for this workshop is still available. Please see our website for the application and information.
Block Lotto – For a tutorial on how to make your hexies, please see: https://www.theyellowbirdhouse.com/epp-hexie-projects-to-sew/ We have five extra kits so if you could not make the meeting, you can pick up a kit in Laguna Hills (half price).
The winner of the disappearing 9 patch block lotto was Jason Titus. Congratulations Jason!
Philanthropy – Lisa advised that the fabrics for sale at the meeting would be the last of the sales. The remaining fabrics will be donated to the Navajo community. We raised over $1000. Half of the funds will be used to purchase hygiene products that will be donated to the Orangewood Children’s Foundation for emancipated foster youth. The remaining funds will be used for our guild’s ongoing efforts in philanthropy as well as our ongoing expenses.
12 pillow cases were returned, which now can be donated to the Orangewood Children’s Foundation.
Community Outreach Quilt – Gail reported on the status of the quilt which will be sent out for quilting and completion to meet the Modern Quilt Guild timeline and submission for QuiltCon. Gail thanked the following for piecing blocks: Jason, Sally, Virginia, Dianne, Betty, and Sue; and assembling blocks: Sue, Susie, Betty, and Maritza.
Show and Tell – beautiful quilts presented by Mona, Kelly, Gail, Jason, Sam and Trisha. Congratulations to Jason and Gail on their OC Fair winning quilts too. Jason received the Modern Quilt Award from us and Gail received the Theme Award from the OC Fair.
