Thank you for attending our September meeting! Karen M. moved the tables out of the space to free up more room for our attendees. Thanks Karen! Thanks to the members who helped put the Cosmic Quilting space back to its usual set-up. And thanks to Julie for bringing fruit cups for our social time!
Annual Meeting
Our annual meeting will be in November. In October, we will be putting a budget together to determine if dues need to stay the same or if they will increase. We are looking for volunteers to help out with creating the budget. Budget will go out to members in October and will be voted on in November. Bunnie and Susie are co-charing this committee and we would like 2-3 members to help out. The committee will meet on October 18th at Bunnie’s house in Newport Beach for dinner and wine. Please email us if you are interested in helping out!
Also, the bylaws are included with this email for members to review. This will be voted on at the November meeting, also.
In November, we will be having November elections. Officer positions are: President, Vice-President, or two Co-Presidents, Treasurer, and Secretary. Our current officers are:
* Co-President: Karen A. will not be re-running.
* Co-President: Bunnie is open to re-running, but is also open to someone else taking over as president.
* Secretary: Dawn is open to being secretary again, or is willing to take a position that we have been having trouble filling, like Social Media.
* Treasurer: Susie is re-running.
We will also have a nominating committee, email us if you would like to join this committee to help elect officers. This committee will just need to meet once before the November meeting. Karen M. has already volunteered to be on this committee.
MQG Mini Quilt Swap
Susan brought some examples of mini quilts and items that she has received doing many different swaps. Thanks, Susan! One of the neat things about this swap is that there will be a meetup at QuiltCon so you will have the opportunity to meet your swap partner. Info:
Once again, we’re making mini quilts — no larger than 24″ x 24″ — with the suggestion (not requirement) that they be themed for your swap partner’s sewing space. This swap is a one-to-one partner swap, so once matched, participants will know who they’re making for and who’s making for them. If you’re going to QuiltCon and your partner is too, we’ll have a special meetup so you can swap in person. Not going? Not a problem! Mail your item to your partner, get yours in the mail and join the virtual meetup on Instagram. You’ll have a Swap Fairy assigned to you to check in during the swap to make sure everyone’s on track. You’ll meet your Swap Fairy and get to know them in early November when partners are announced.
Important Dates for the Mini Swap:
Participant sign-ups open: October 1, 2017
Participant sign-ups close: October 25, 2017
Participants notified of match with partner: early November, 2017
Deadline for international shipping: February 9, 2018
Deadline for domestic shipping: February 16, 2018
QuiltCon Charity Quilt
We had an “interactive display” of the progress of the charity quilt. We will put all of the individual blocks together at the next Sew-In in October! The border will be attached, and we will also gather ideas for the quilting. Hoffman Fabrics will be donating the fabric for the backing. Lucinda brought several examples and the guild voted on the backing fabric. In November, we will have a “quilting bee” and either do a combo of hand quilting and longarm quilting.
Demos
Elise has volunteered to do a demo at the October meeting, if you would like to share a cool technique with the guild, just let us know and you can be the star of a future meeting!
November Challenge
How is your November philanthropy challenge quilt coming along? The challenge is to make a quilt using the digitally printed fabric donated by Hawthorne Threads that have been handed out at past meetings. Don’t forget to put your progress on Facebook or Instagram and tag #hawthornethreads and #OCMQG. Requirements for the challenge:
Create a quilt in a size between baby (30 x 40) up to a twin (70 x 90)
The quilt must be complete: quilted, bound, and labelled
Design should be inspired by a Hawthorne Threads Digitally Printed Fabric and should include the fabric in the quilt top.
These quilts will be donated to a local charity TBD.
Workshops
We received some great feedback during the meeting about how to make workshops WORK better for the guild. Elise has volunteered to be a Workshop Chairwoman! Thank you Elise! We hope that by having a dedicated person actively working on planning workshops, that we will be able to:
– offer workshops regularly
– offer workshops that will be scheduled out 6-12 months in advance
– offer workshops that will be well attended (and that will pay for themselves)
QuiltCon OCMQG Social Time
Karen M. came up with the idea to have a designated social time at QuiltCon. We would use the QuiltCon app to advertise that members of the OCMQG are available for an informal “meet and greet”. This would be a great way to meet people who are attending QuiltCon from all over the country—and the world! It’s also a way to let SoCal people know about our guild. More info will be coming!
Block Lotto instructions are attached to this email. Thank you Lucinda for the great work you do planning Block Lotto!
Our next Sew-In: October 8 at Cosmic Quilting
