OCMQG July 2017 Meeting Recap
Co-president Karen A. lead our meeting. It was great to have her in town and not working in Florida for our July meeting!
Volunteer Positions
Shannon and Stacy volunteered to be co-chairs for the Philanthropy Chairpersons! Also, Kaylin has volunteered to take over updating the blog and has been one of our photographers at the last several meetings. Thank you ladies!!
Update on QuiltCon Philanthropy Quilt:
The Philanthropy Quilt committee have completed the pattern for our “Modern Traditionalism” quilt. The fabric has been purchased and we are on schedule to complete the quilt on time. Thank you everyone who has been involved with the planning and we hope everyone will help to make a block! Thank you Karen for the update!
Workshops
The Compass Bag Workshop will be lead by Elise! It’s on August 27 from 10:00-3:00. $30 for members and $40 for non-members. We have five sign-ups so far, feel free to email Susie if you would like to sign up at sujoh@hotmail.com. The pattern is available from Noodle Head. Sew Vac Long Beach has the pattern along with the hardware that you will need. We will send a supply list to those who have signed up soon.
Our next workshop will be in early November. We passed around a survey listing three different workshops and let members vote on which one(s) they would like to take. We’re hoping these workshops will be of interest to our members! Also, Craft Napa is in January and we are looking into getting one of the presenters at that event to come down and to do a workshop in OC.
July Quilt Challenge
We had so many BEAUTIFUL entries for our July Challenge! Our winners were:
1st place: Sandy $75 gift card!
2nd place: Bunnie $50 gift card!
3rd place: Sandra J. $35 gift card!

Our prizes for this challenge were gift certificates from Superbuzzy.com in Ventura.
November Philanthropy Quilt Challenge
We announced the challenge for the November Philanthropy Quilt at the July meeting. We received many samples of digitally printed fabric from Hawthorne Threads who kindly donated these to the guild. The challenge is to design a quilt using the digitally printed fabric as inspiration, and to also incorporate it into the quilt. We also handed out Hawthorne Threads’s social media info for members to tag them on social media. We’d like to encourage members to post pics of the prizes and fabrics that they receive at meetings to thank the companies that donate these items to us. The rules for the challenge are:
-Create a quilt in a size between baby (30 x 40) up to a twin (70 x 90)
-The quilt must be complete: quilted, bound, and labelled
-Design should be inspired by a Hawthorne Threads Digitally Printed Fabric and should include the fabric in the quilt top.
-If you are sharing your progress on social media, please include #hawthornethreads and #ocmqg in your comments along with your photo.
These quilts will be donated to a local charity TBD. If you weren’t at the July meeting and want to participate, don’t despair! We still have a lot of samples left, so come to the August meeting to pick out your fabric sample.

Handmade Item Raffle
Kathy S. donated two gorgeous handmade fold-up grocery bags for our Handmade Item Raffle—thank you Kathy S!
Make it Modern
For our Make It Modern segment, Karen A. created a “modern vs. traditionalism” poster board for members to place a post-it to mark where they fall in the realm of modern vs. traditional quilting. It was interesting to see how our members judge their modern/traditional aesthetic.
Scrap Swap
We had our Scrap Swap where three lucky ladies were randomly chosen to take home a big bag of scraps!
Annual Meeting
Our annual meeting is in November where there will be voting on officer positions, by-laws, and the 2018 budget. The last Thursday in November is AFTER Thanksgiving, so we voted to have the November meeting on 11/30.
Our next meeting is August 31 (the 5th Thursday of the month)
Our next Sew-In is August 13, from noon to 4:00 at CQ.
Here are some of the quilts from this month’s challenge!
